Ruth 3 · Grade 5
A Worthy Woman
Read and Think
Naomi, who once called herself empty, now looked for rest for Ruth, a secure home where it would be well with her. Boaz was their kinsman, and that night he would winnow barley at the threshing floor. Naomi gave Ruth careful instructions, and Ruth replied, All that you say, I will do.
Ruth went down and followed the plan. After Boaz lay down at the end of the heap of grain, she came softly and lay at his feet. At midnight he was startled and asked who she was. Ruth answered, I am Ruth your servant. Therefore spread the corner of your garment over your servant; for you are a near kinsman. In chapter 2, Boaz had blessed Ruth for taking refuge under Yahweh's wings; now Ruth asked Boaz to spread his garment over her, a request for marriage and protection.
Boaz responded with honor. He said she was blessed by Yahweh and had shown more kindness now than at the beginning, because she had not sought young men. He told her not to be afraid and said all the city knew she was a worthy woman. Yet Boaz was careful to do right: a kinsman nearer than he must have the first chance. He vowed, as Yahweh lives, to act if the other would not. Before dawn he gave her six measures of barley so she would not return empty to Naomi. Naomi told Ruth to wait, confident the man would not rest until the matter was settled.
