Ruth 3 · Grade 4
A Respectful Request
Read and Think
Naomi wanted to seek rest, a safe home, for Ruth. She reminded Ruth that Boaz was their kinsman and told her to go to the threshing floor where he was winnowing barley. Ruth answered, All that you say, I will do.
After Boaz finished eating and lay down at the end of the heap of grain, Ruth quietly lay at his feet. At midnight he was startled. Ruth asked him to spread the corner of his garment over her because he was a near kinsman. This was a respectful request for marriage and protection.
Boaz blessed her for this kindness and praised her for not following young men. He called her a worthy woman, as all the city knew. He promised to act, but first a nearer kinsman had the right. He sent her home before dawn with six measures of barley, saying, Don't go empty to your mother-in-law. Naomi told Ruth to wait, because Boaz would settle it that day.
