Ruth Finds Favor

Ruth went to glean grain behind the reapers. She happened to come to the part of the field that belonged to Boaz. He was a mighty man of wealth from Elimelech's family.

Boaz greeted his reapers, May Yahweh be with you. They answered, May Yahweh bless you. Boaz asked about Ruth, then told her to stay close to his maidens and drink from their water jars. Ruth bowed and asked why he was kind to a foreigner. Boaz said he had heard all she had done for Naomi. He said Ruth had come to take refuge under Yahweh's wings.

At meal time, Boaz gave her bread and parched grain. He told his young men to pull out some grain for her. She gleaned about an ephah of barley. Naomi said, May he be blessed by Yahweh, who has not abandoned His kindness. Boaz is one of our near kinsmen.

Kindness in the Harvest

Name Date

Read and Think

Ruth offered to glean, gathering grain left behind by the reapers. She happened to come to the field of Boaz, a wealthy relative of Elimelech. The word happened shows how God works quietly through ordinary events.

Boaz greeted his workers with a blessing in Yahweh's name, showing his faith. He asked about the young Moabite woman, then told Ruth to stay in his field, close to his maidens. He told his young men to protect her and not bother her. When Ruth asked why a foreigner received such favor, Boaz said he had heard how she left her own land to care for Naomi. He blessed her: May Yahweh repay your work, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.

Boaz went beyond what was required. He shared his meal with Ruth and told his workers to let her glean among the sheaves and even pull out grain for her. She brought home about an ephah of barley. Naomi praised Yahweh, who had not abandoned His kindness to the living and the dead, and explained that Boaz was a near kinsman. Ruth gleaned through barley and wheat harvest.

Refuge Under His Wings

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 2 introduces Boaz, a relative of Elimelech and a mighty man of wealth. Ruth asked to glean behind the reapers, hoping to find favor with someone. She happened to come to the portion of the field belonging to Boaz. The writer uses ordinary language, yet readers see God's hand guiding her steps.

Boaz arrived from Bethlehem and greeted his reapers, May Yahweh be with you, and they answered, May Yahweh bless you. His workplace honored God. Learning that Ruth was the Moabite who came back with Naomi, Boaz told her to stay in his field, near his maidens, and to drink from the vessels. Ruth bowed to the ground and asked why she had found favor, since she was a foreigner. Boaz explained he had heard of her loyalty to Naomi and blessed her: May Yahweh repay your work, and a full reward be given to you from Yahweh, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.

Boaz then became part of the answer to his own prayer. He invited Ruth to eat with the reapers, gave her parched grain until she was satisfied, and quietly ordered his men to let her glean among the sheaves and pull out extra grain. That evening she beat out about an ephah of barley and shared it with Naomi. Naomi blessed Boaz, who had not abandoned his kindness to the living and the dead, and revealed that he was one of their near kinsmen. Ruth gleaned with his maidens until the end of barley and wheat harvest.
