Ruth 2 · Grade 4
Kindness in the Harvest
Read and Think
Ruth offered to glean, gathering grain left behind by the reapers. She happened to come to the field of Boaz, a wealthy relative of Elimelech. The word happened shows how God works quietly through ordinary events.
Boaz greeted his workers with a blessing in Yahweh's name, showing his faith. He asked about the young Moabite woman, then told Ruth to stay in his field, close to his maidens. He told his young men to protect her and not bother her. When Ruth asked why a foreigner received such favor, Boaz said he had heard how she left her own land to care for Naomi. He blessed her: May Yahweh repay your work, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.
Boaz went beyond what was required. He shared his meal with Ruth and told his workers to let her glean among the sheaves and even pull out grain for her. She brought home about an ephah of barley. Naomi praised Yahweh, who had not abandoned His kindness to the living and the dead, and explained that Boaz was a near kinsman. Ruth gleaned through barley and wheat harvest.
