In the days when the judges judged, there was a famine. Elimelech of Bethlehem Judah went to Moab with his wife Naomi and his sons Mahlon and Chilion. The sons married Orpah and Ruth.

Elimelech died, and then Mahlon and Chilion died. Naomi was left without her husband and her two sons. She heard that Yahweh had visited His people in giving them bread, so she started home.

Naomi told her daughters-in-law to return to their mothers' houses. Orpah kissed her and went back. But Ruth said, Where you go, I will go. Your people will be my people, and your God my God. Read and Think

The book of Ruth is set in the days when the judges judged, the same dark time we read about in Judges. A famine drove Elimelech of Bethlehem to Moab with his wife Naomi and their sons. The sons married Moabite women, Orpah and Ruth. After about ten years, Naomi had lost her husband and both sons.

When Naomi heard Yahweh had given His people bread, she set out for Judah. She urged Orpah and Ruth to go home, praying Yahweh would deal kindly with them as they had with her. She said she had no more sons to offer them. Orpah kissed her and returned to her people and her god.

Ruth clung to Naomi. She said, Where you go, I will go; where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God. She promised that only death would part them. In Bethlehem, the whole city was excited. Naomi said she went out full but Yahweh brought her home empty. Yet Ruth was with her, and the barley harvest was beginning.

Read and Think

The opening words connect Ruth to Judges: In the days when the judges judged. While Israel did what was right in its own eyes, a quiet story unfolded in one family from Bethlehem Judah. Famine drove Elimelech to Moab, where his sons Mahlon and Chilion married Orpah and Ruth. Within about ten years, Naomi lost her husband and both sons.

Hearing that Yahweh had visited His people in giving them bread, Naomi set out for home with her daughters-in-law. Three times she urged them to return. She blessed them, asking Yahweh to grant them rest, each in the house of a husband, and she argued that she had no hope of sons for them. She said Yahweh's hand had gone out against her. Orpah kissed her and went back to her people and her god.

Ruth refused. Her words are among the most famous in Scripture: Where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God. She bound herself with an oath in Yahweh's name, so a Moabite woman now trusted Israel's God. In Bethlehem, Naomi asked to be called Mara, saying the Almighty had dealt very bitterly with her; she went out full and came home empty. Yet the chapter closes with two signs of hope: Ruth beside her, and the beginning of barley harvest.
