Read and Think

The opening words connect Ruth to Judges: In the days when the judges judged. While Israel did what was right in its own eyes, a quiet story unfolded in one family from Bethlehem Judah. Famine drove Elimelech to Moab, where his sons Mahlon and Chilion married Orpah and Ruth. Within about ten years, Naomi lost her husband and both sons.

Hearing that Yahweh had visited His people in giving them bread, Naomi set out for home with her daughters-in-law. Three times she urged them to return. She blessed them, asking Yahweh to grant them rest, each in the house of a husband, and she argued that she had no hope of sons for them. She said Yahweh's hand had gone out against her. Orpah kissed her and went back to her people and her god.

Ruth refused. Her words are among the most famous in Scripture: Where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God. She bound herself with an oath in Yahweh's name, so a Moabite woman now trusted Israel's God. In Bethlehem, Naomi asked to be called Mara, saying the Almighty had dealt very bitterly with her; she went out full and came home empty. Yet the chapter closes with two signs of hope: Ruth beside her, and the beginning of barley harvest.
