Ruth 1 · Grade 4
Loyal Love
Read and Think
The book of Ruth is set in the days when the judges judged, the same dark time we read about in Judges. A famine drove Elimelech of Bethlehem to Moab with his wife Naomi and their sons. The sons married Moabite women, Orpah and Ruth. After about ten years, Naomi had lost her husband and both sons.
When Naomi heard Yahweh had given His people bread, she set out for Judah. She urged Orpah and Ruth to go home, praying Yahweh would deal kindly with them as they had with her. She said she had no more sons to offer them. Orpah kissed her and returned to her people and her god.
Ruth clung to Naomi. She said, Where you go, I will go; where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God. She promised that only death would part them. In Bethlehem, the whole city was excited. Naomi said she went out full but Yahweh brought her home empty. Yet Ruth was with her, and the barley harvest was beginning.

Think About It
Ruth chose to stay with Naomi when it was hard. Who is someone you can be loyal to when life is hard for them?
Naomi felt empty, yet Ruth was right beside her. How might God be caring for you in ways you do not notice yet?
Memory Verse
“Ruth said, “Don’t urge me to leave you, and to return from following you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God.”
