Romans 7 · Grade 4
I Thank God Through Jesus Christ
Read and Think
Paul says believers have died to the law through the body of Christ. Now they belong to the one who was raised from the dead, so they can bear fruit to God. They serve in newness of the Spirit.
"What shall we say then? Is the law sin? May it never be!" Paul would not have known sin except through the law. He would not have known coveting unless the law had said, do not covet.
"Therefore the law indeed is holy, and the commandment holy, righteous, and good." Paul describes a struggle. "For I don't understand what I am doing. For I don't practice what I desire to do; but what I hate, that I do."
Paul delights in God's law in his inner self. But he sees another law fighting in his body. "What a wretched man I am! Who will deliver me out of the body of this death?" Paul answers, "I thank God through Jesus Christ, our Lord!"
