Revelation 9 · Grade 3

They Did Not Repent

Name Date

Read the Story

The fifth angel sounded. John saw a star that had fallen from the sky. It was given the key to the pit. Smoke came out, and creatures like locusts came out of the smoke. They were told not to hurt the grass, any green thing, or any tree. They could only hurt people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.

The sixth angel sounded. Four angels who were bound at the great river Euphrates were set free. A great army rode out. John heard the number. It was two hundred million.

These were terrible warnings. But the rest of mankind did not repent. They kept worshiping idols. They didn’t turn away from the wrong things they were doing. God wanted them to turn back, but they would not.

Memory Verse

“They were told that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree, but only those people who don’t have God’s seal on their foreheads.”

Revelation 9 · Grade 4

The First Woe

Name Date

Read and Think

The fifth trumpet is the first of three woes. A star fallen from the sky is given the key to the pit of the abyss. Smoke pours out and darkens the sun. Out of the smoke come creatures like locusts. Yet they are limited. They may not harm the grass or trees, and they cannot harm those who have the seal of God on their foreheads. Their power lasts only five months.

The creatures have a king, the angel of the abyss. His name in Hebrew is Abaddon and in Greek Apollyon, which both mean Destroyer. John says, The first woe is past. Behold, there are still two woes coming after this.

The sixth trumpet releases four angels bound at the river Euphrates. A huge army of horsemen rides out, and a third of mankind dies. Even after this, the rest do not repent of their idols or of their murders, sorceries, sexual immorality, and thefts. The chapter shows how hard human hearts can be.

  1. What is the fifth trumpet the first of?

  2. Who cannot be harmed by the creatures?

  3. What do Abaddon and Apollyon mean?

  4. What does the chapter show about human hearts?

Think About It

  2. Why might people refuse to turn to God even when warned?

Revelation 9 · Grade 5

Hard Hearts

Name Date

Read and Think

The fifth and sixth trumpets are also called the first and second woes. When the fifth angel sounds, a star fallen to earth is given the key to the pit of the abyss. Smoke rises like a great furnace, and from it come locust-like creatures with power like scorpions. The picture echoes the plague of locusts in Exodus and the locust army in Joel. But the creatures are on a short leash. They may not harm grass or trees, may not touch those with God’s seal, and may not kill. Their time is limited to five months.

Their king is the angel of the abyss, called Abaddon in Hebrew and Apollyon in Greek, meaning Destroyer. Even here, the power of evil works only within the limits God allows. Then John reports, The first woe is past. Behold, there are still two woes coming after this.

At the sixth trumpet, a voice from the golden altar releases four angels bound at the great river Euphrates. They had been prepared for the hour, the day, the month, and the year, showing that God sets the timing. A vast army of horsemen kills a third of mankind. Yet the chapter ends with sad words. The rest of mankind did not repent of the works of their hands, that they wouldn’t worship demons and idols. They didn’t repent of their murders, their sorceries, their sexual immorality, or their thefts. The warnings were meant to bring repentance, but hearts stayed hard.

Show What You Know

  1. What earlier Bible scenes does the locust picture echo?

  2. What limits are put on the creatures?

  3. What does the exact hour, day, month, and year show?

  4. What were the warnings meant to bring?

Think About It

  1. How does this chapter show that evil has limits set by God?

  2. What does the ending teach about the danger of a hardened heart?

Memory Verse

“The four angels were freed who had been prepared for that hour and day and month and year, so that they might kill one third of mankind.”
