Revelation 1: The Vision of the Risen Jesus

Revelation begins as the revelation of Jesus Christ, given to his servant John. A blessing is promised to those who read, hear and keep its words. John greets seven assemblies in Asia with grace from the one who is, who was and who is to come. On the island of Patmos, on the Lord’s day, John hears a voice like a trumpet and sees one like a son of man among seven golden lampstands, with eyes like fire and a face shining like the sun. John falls down, but Jesus touches him and says, Don’t be afraid. I am the First and the Last. He tells John to write what he sees.

Revelation 2: Letters to Four Churches

Jesus gives John messages for four assemblies. Ephesus works hard and endures but has left its first love, so it must remember and repent. Smyrna is poor and will suffer, yet Jesus calls it rich and says, Be faithful to death, and I will give you the crown of life. Pergamum holds to Jesus’ name where Satan’s throne is, but some follow false teaching. Thyatira grows in love, faith and service but tolerates a false prophetess. To each church Jesus promises a reward for the one who overcomes.

Revelation 3: Letters to Three More Churches

Jesus sends messages to three more assemblies. Sardis has a name for being alive but is dead, so it must wake up, though a few there walk with him in white. Philadelphia has little power but has kept his word, and Jesus has set before it an open door that no one can shut. Laodicea is lukewarm and thinks it is rich, but it is poor and blind. Jesus loves it, rebukes it and says, Behold, I stand at the door and knock. Whoever opens the door, he will come in and eat with them.

Revelation 4: The Throne in Heaven

John sees a door opened in heaven and hears the voice like a trumpet say, Come up here. He sees a throne, and one sitting on it who shines like jasper and sardius, with a rainbow like an emerald around it. Around the throne are twenty-four elders in white with gold crowns, seven lamps of fire, a sea like glass, and four living creatures full of eyes. Day and night they say, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty. The elders throw their crowns before the throne and worship God, who created all things.

Revelation 5: The Lamb Is Worthy

In the right hand of the one on the throne is a scroll sealed with seven seals. A mighty angel asks, Who is worthy to open the book? No one is found, and John weeps. An elder tells him, Don’t weep. The Lion who is of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome. John then sees a Lamb standing, looking as if it had been killed. The Lamb takes the scroll, and the living creatures and elders fall down with harps and bowls of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. They sing a new song: You are worthy to take the book and to open its seals, for you were killed, and bought us for God with your blood out of every tribe, language, people, and nation. Thousands of angels and every creature join the praise.

Chapter 6Preschool–Grade 5

Revelation 6: The Lamb Opens the Seals

The Lamb begins to open the seven seals. With the first four seals, four horsemen ride out: a white horse with a rider who conquers, a red horse that takes peace from the earth, a black horse bringing scarcity, and a pale horse named Death. At the fifth seal, John sees under the altar those who had been killed for God’s word, crying out, How long? They are each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer. At the sixth seal there is a great earthquake, the sun turns dark and the sky rolls up like a scroll, and people hide, asking who is able to stand.

Revelation 7: A Great Multitude

Before more judgment, four angels hold back the four winds, and another angel seals God’s servants on their foreheads, 144,000 from every tribe of Israel. Then John sees a great multitude no one can count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and the Lamb in white robes with palm branches. They cry, Salvation be to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb! An elder explains that they have come out of the great suffering and washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb. God will shelter them; they will never hunger or thirst again, the Lamb will be their shepherd, and God will wipe away every tear.

Chapter 8Preschool–Grade 5

Revelation 8: Silence and Trumpets

When the Lamb opens the seventh seal, there is silence in heaven for about half an hour. Seven angels are given seven trumpets. Another angel offers much incense with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar, and the smoke rises before God. Then the angel fills the censer with fire from the altar and throws it to the earth, and there are thunders and an earthquake. The first four trumpets sound, and a third of the earth, the sea, the rivers and the sky are struck. An eagle cries, Woe! Woe! Woe to those who dwell on the earth, because three more trumpets are yet to sound.

Chapter 9Preschool–Grade 5

Revelation 9: The Fifth and Sixth Trumpets

The fifth angel sounds, and a star fallen from the sky is given the key to the bottomless pit. Smoke rises and locust-like creatures come out. They are told not to harm the grass or trees, but only people who do not have God’s seal on their foreheads, and only for five months. The sixth angel sounds, and four angels bound at the Euphrates are released with a huge army of horsemen, and a third of mankind is killed. Yet the rest of the people still do not repent of their idols, murders, sorceries, sexual immorality or thefts.

Chapter 10Preschool–Grade 5

Revelation 10: The Angel and the Little Book

John sees a mighty angel coming down from the sky, wrapped in a cloud, with a rainbow on his head and a face like the sun. He holds a little open book and stands with one foot on the sea and one on the land. He shouts like a lion roaring, and seven thunders speak, but John is told to seal up what they said and not write it. The angel lifts his hand to the sky and swears that there will be no more delay: when the seventh trumpet sounds, the mystery of God will be finished. John is told to eat the little book. It is sweet as honey in his mouth but bitter in his stomach, and he must prophesy again about many peoples.

Chapter 11Preschool–Grade 5

Revelation 11: Two Witnesses and the Seventh Trumpet

John is given a measuring reed to measure the temple of God and those who worship there. God gives power to his two witnesses, who prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth. They are the two olive trees and two lampstands. When they finish, the beast from the abyss kills them and people celebrate, but after three and a half days the breath of life from God enters them, they stand up, and they go up to heaven in a cloud. The seventh angel sounds, and loud voices in heaven say, The kingdom of the world has become the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ. He will reign forever and ever. God’s temple in heaven is opened, and the ark of his covenant is seen.

Chapter 12Preschool–Grade 5

Revelation 12: The Woman, the Child and the Dragon

A great sign appears in the sky: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars. She is about to give birth. A great red dragon waits to devour her child, but the child, who will rule the nations, is caught up to God and to his throne, and the woman flees to a place God has prepared. War breaks out in heaven, Michael and his angels fight the dragon, and the dragon, the old serpent called the devil and Satan, is thrown down to the earth. A loud voice says the believers overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony. The dragon pursues the woman, but she is helped and kept safe.

Chapter 13Preschool–Grade 5

Revelation 13: Two Beasts

John sees a beast rising out of the sea with ten horns and seven heads. The dragon gives it power, and the whole earth follows it and worships the dragon and the beast, saying, Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him? The beast speaks against God and makes war on the saints for forty-two months. Everyone whose name is not written in the Lamb’s book of life worships it. John calls for perseverance and faith. Then a second beast rises from the earth with two horns like a lamb but speaking like a dragon. It performs signs, makes people worship the first beast and forces everyone to take its mark to buy or sell. Its number is 666.

Chapter 14Preschool–Grade 5

Revelation 14: The Lamb on Mount Zion

John sees the Lamb standing on Mount Zion with the 144,000 who have his name and his Father’s name on their foreheads. They sing a new song that only they can learn, follow the Lamb wherever he goes, and no lie is found in their mouth. Three angels fly overhead: the first proclaims an eternal gospel, Fear the Lord, and give him glory; the second announces that Babylon the great has fallen; the third warns those who worship the beast. A voice says, Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on, and the Spirit says they rest from their labors. Then one like a son of man on a white cloud reaps the earth with a sickle, and an angel gathers the grapes into the winepress of God’s wrath.

Chapter 15Preschool–Grade 5

Revelation 15: The Song of Moses and the Lamb

John sees another great sign: seven angels with the seven last plagues, in which the wrath of God is finished. He sees a sea of glass mixed with fire, and those who overcame the beast standing on it with harps. They sing the song of Moses and the song of the Lamb: Great and marvelous are your works, Lord God, the Almighty! Righteous and true are your ways, King of the nations. All the nations will come and worship before you. Then the temple in heaven is opened, the seven angels come out dressed in pure linen, and they are given seven golden bowls full of God’s wrath. The temple fills with smoke from God’s glory.

Chapter 16Preschool–Grade 5

Revelation 16: The Seven Bowls

A loud voice from the temple tells the seven angels to pour out the bowls of God’s wrath on the earth. The bowls bring sores, the sea and rivers turned to blood, scorching heat from the sun, and darkness on the beast’s kingdom. The angel of the waters and the altar declare that God’s judgments are true and righteous. Yet people curse God and refuse to repent. The sixth bowl dries up the Euphrates, and spirits gather kings to the place called Harmagedon. Jesus says, Behold, I come like a thief. Blessed is he who watches. At the seventh bowl a voice says, It is done! There is a great earthquake, and Babylon the great is remembered before God.

Chapter 17Preschool–Grade 5

Revelation 17: The Lamb Overcomes

One of the seven angels shows John the judgment of the great city called Babylon, pictured as a woman dressed in purple and scarlet, decorated with gold and jewels, riding a scarlet beast with seven heads and ten horns. She holds a golden cup of wrongdoing and is drunk with the blood of the saints. The angel explains the mystery: the heads are mountains and kings, the horns are kings who give their power to the beast, and the waters are peoples and nations. These kings will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will overcome them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called, chosen and faithful. In the end the beast and the kings turn against the city, and God’s purpose is carried out.

Chapter 18Preschool–Grade 5

Revelation 18: Babylon Has Fallen

An angel with great authority comes down from heaven, and the earth is lit with his glory. He cries, Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! Another voice calls God’s people: Come out of her, my people, that you have no participation in her sins. The kings, merchants and sailors who grew rich through her stand far off and mourn, because her wealth, trade and luxury are gone in one hour. Heaven is called to rejoice because God has judged her. A mighty angel throws a stone like a great millstone into the sea, saying Babylon will be thrown down like that and found no more. No more music, work, lamp light or wedding joy will be heard in her.

Chapter 19Preschool–Grade 5

Revelation 19: King of Kings and Lord of Lords

A great multitude in heaven shouts Hallelujah, praising God because his judgments are true and righteous. The elders and living creatures worship, and a voice from the throne calls all God’s servants to praise him. The wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride is clothed in bright, pure, fine linen, the righteous acts of the saints. An angel tells John to write that those invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb are blessed. Then heaven opens, and a rider on a white horse appears, called Faithful and True and The Word of God, with many crowns and the name King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He defeats the beast and the false prophet, who are thrown into the lake of fire.

Chapter 20Preschool–Grade 5

Revelation 20: The Great White Throne

An angel comes down from heaven with the key of the abyss and a great chain, binds the dragon, who is the devil and Satan, and shuts him in the abyss for a thousand years. John sees thrones and the souls of those who were faithful to Jesus, who live and reign with Christ for a thousand years; this is the first resurrection. Afterward Satan is released, gathers the nations, and surrounds the camp of the saints, but fire from heaven stops them, and the devil is thrown into the lake of fire. Then John sees a great white throne. The dead, great and small, are judged from the books, and the book of life is opened. Death and Hades are thrown into the lake of fire.

Chapter 21Preschool–Grade 5

Revelation 21: All Things New

John sees a new heaven and a new earth, and the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride. A loud voice announces that God’s dwelling is with people; he will wipe away every tear, and there will be no more death, mourning, crying, or pain. The One on the throne says, I am making all things new, and offers the water of life freely to the thirsty. An angel shows John the city shining with God’s glory, with twelve gates named for the twelve tribes of Israel and twelve foundations named for the twelve apostles of the Lamb. The city is pure gold, its gates are pearls, and it has no temple, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. It needs no sun or moon, for God’s glory is its light.

Chapter 22Preschool–Grade 5

Revelation 22: Come, Lord Jesus

The angel shows John a river of water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the city’s street. On each side is the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, and its leaves are for the healing of the nations. There will be no curse any more; God’s servants will see his face, and there will be no night, for the Lord God will be their light. Jesus says, Behold, I am coming soon, and calls himself the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last. Those who wash their robes are blessed and may eat from the tree of life. The Spirit and the bride say, Come, and anyone who is thirsty may take the water of life freely. The book ends, Yes, I am coming soon. Amen! Yes, come, Lord Jesus.
