How Long?

Name Date

Read the Story

John saw the Lamb open one of the seven seals. One of the four living creatures said, Come! A white horse came out. Its rider had a bow and a crown. He went out to conquer. Three more horses followed, red, black, and pale. They brought hard times on the earth.

When the Lamb opened the fifth seal, John saw God’s people who had died for his word. They cried with a loud voice, How long, Master, the holy and true? A long white robe was given to each of them. They were told to rest a little while longer.

At the sixth seal there was a great earthquake. The sun became black. The stars of the sky fell to the earth. The sky was removed like a scroll when it is rolled up. People hid and asked, Who is able to stand?

Revelation 6 · Grade 4

The Cry Under the Altar

Name Date

Read and Think

The Lamb opens the first four seals, and each time a living creature says, Come! Four horsemen ride out. A white horse goes out conquering. A red horse takes peace from the earth. A black horse brings scarcity, so that food is costly. A pale horse is named Death. These riders picture the troubles of a broken world: war, hunger, and death.

When the Lamb opens the fifth seal, John sees under the altar the souls of those who had been killed for the word of God. They cry out, How long, Master, the holy and true, until you judge? Each of them is given a white robe. They are told to rest a little longer. God hears their cry and comforts them.

The sixth seal brings a great earthquake. The sun becomes black and the moon like blood. The sky is removed like a scroll when it is rolled up. Every mountain and island is moved. Kings and ordinary people hide in caves. They say the great day of wrath has come, and ask, Who is able to stand? The next chapter answers that question.

Revelation 6 · Grade 5

Who Is Able to Stand?

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 6 shows the Lamb opening the first six seals. The first four release four horsemen, each summoned when a living creature says, Come! The white horse’s rider has a bow and goes out conquering. The red horse’s rider is given a great sword and takes peace from the earth. The black horse’s rider holds scales, and food becomes very costly. The pale horse’s rider is named Death, and Hades follows. These scenes picture war, famine, and death, troubles that have marked human history. Yet notice who opens each seal: the Lamb. Even the hardest times are not outside his authority.

The fifth seal moves from earth to heaven. Under the altar are the souls of those who had been killed for the word of God and for their testimony. They cry, How long, Master, the holy and true, until you judge? They are not scolded for asking. Each receives a white robe, and they are told to rest a little longer until the full number of their fellow servants is complete. Their cry is like the lament Psalms, which ask God to act.

The sixth seal is described with the language of the whole creation shaking. There is a great earthquake. The sun becomes black as sackcloth, the moon like blood, and the stars fall like unripe figs in a strong wind. The sky is removed like a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island moves. From kings to slaves, people hide in caves and say to the mountains, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb. They ask, Who is able to stand? The chapter ends on that question, and chapter 7 gives the answer.

Show What You Know

  1. What does the rider on the black horse hold?

  2. Who opens each seal?

  3. How long are the souls told to rest?

  4. Who hides in caves?
