Jesus at the Door

Jesus sent letters to three more churches. One church seemed alive, but it was asleep. Jesus said, Wake up! Another church was small. Jesus said, Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one can shut.

The last church was not hot or cold. Jesus loved them. He said, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, then I will come in to him and will dine with him.

Read the Story

To Sardis Jesus says, You have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Remember therefore how you have received and heard. Yet a few names in Sardis did not defile their garments. Jesus said, They will walk with me in white, for they are worthy.

To Philadelphia he says, I have set before you an open door, which no one can shut. You have a little power, and kept my word. I am coming quickly! Hold firmly that which you have, so that no one takes your crown.

To Laodicea he says, You are neither cold nor hot. You say, I am rich, and have gotten riches, and have need of nothing. But Jesus says they are poor and blind. As many as I love, I reprove and chasten. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, then I will come in to him and will dine with him.

Memory Verse

“I know your works (behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one can shut), that you have a little power, and kept my word, and didn’t deny my name.

Revelation 3 · Grade 4

Neither Cold Nor Hot

Name Date

Read and Think

Sardis looks alive, but Jesus says it is dead. Its works are not complete before God. He tells it to wake up, strengthen what remains, remember, and repent. A few in Sardis have not soiled their garments. They will walk with him in white, and he will confess their names before his Father.

Philadelphia receives only praise. It has a little power but has kept Jesus’ word and not denied his name. Jesus holds the key of David. He sets before them an open door, which no one can shut. He promises to keep them in the hour of testing and says, Hold firmly that which you have, so that no one takes your crown.

Laodicea is lukewarm, neither cold nor hot. It says, I am rich, and have gotten riches, and have need of nothing. But Jesus says it is wretched, poor, blind, and naked. He counsels it to buy from him gold refined by fire, white garments, and eye salve. As many as I love, I reprove and chasten. Then he says, Behold, I stand at the door and knock.

Revelation 3 · Grade 5

I Stand at the Door

Name Date

Read and Think

The message to Sardis is sharp. You have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Jesus calls them to wake up and strengthen the things that remain. If they do not watch, he will come like a thief. Still, a few in Sardis have kept their garments clean. They will walk with him in white, and their names will stay in the book of life.

Philadelphia is weak in power but strong in faithfulness. Jesus, who holds the key of David, says he has set before them an open door, which no one can shut. Because they kept his word with patience, he will keep them from the hour of testing. He promises that the one who overcomes will be a pillar in the temple of God, with God’s name written on him.

Laodicea was a wealthy city, and the assembly there felt self-sufficient. Jesus says they are lukewarm, neither cold nor hot, and he will spit them out. They think they are rich, but they are wretched, poor, blind, and naked. Yet his rebuke comes from love: As many as I love, I reprove and chasten. Be zealous therefore, and repent. Then comes a famous invitation. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, then I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with me.

Show What You Know

  1. What will happen if Sardis does not watch?

  2. What will the one who overcomes in Philadelphia become?

  3. Why does Jesus rebuke Laodicea?

  4. What does Jesus promise to the one who opens the door?

Think About It

  1. How can comfort and wealth make people lukewarm toward God?
