Revelation 3 · Grade 5
I Stand at the Door
Read and Think
The message to Sardis is sharp. You have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Jesus calls them to wake up and strengthen the things that remain. If they do not watch, he will come like a thief. Still, a few in Sardis have kept their garments clean. They will walk with him in white, and their names will stay in the book of life.
Philadelphia is weak in power but strong in faithfulness. Jesus, who holds the key of David, says he has set before them an open door, which no one can shut. Because they kept his word with patience, he will keep them from the hour of testing. He promises that the one who overcomes will be a pillar in the temple of God, with God’s name written on him.
Laodicea was a wealthy city, and the assembly there felt self-sufficient. Jesus says they are lukewarm, neither cold nor hot, and he will spit them out. They think they are rich, but they are wretched, poor, blind, and naked. Yet his rebuke comes from love: As many as I love, I reprove and chasten. Be zealous therefore, and repent. Then comes a famous invitation. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, then I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with me.
