The Holy City

Name Date

Read the Story

John saw a new heaven and a new earth. He saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. It was as lovely as a bride on her wedding day.

A loud voice said, God’s dwelling is with people. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more. God said, Behold, I am making all things new. He said, I will give freely to him who is thirsty from the spring of the water of life.

The city shone with God’s glory. Its gates were made of pearls. Its street was pure gold. It did not need the sun or the moon. God’s glory gave it light, and the Lamb was its lamp.

God Dwells with People

Name Date

Read and Think

John sees a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth have passed away, and the sea is no more. He sees the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband. A loud voice says, Behold, God’s dwelling is with people. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more.

The One on the throne says, Behold, I am making all things new. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give freely to him who is thirsty from the spring of the water of life. The one who overcomes will be God’s child. Nothing evil will enter the city.

An angel shows John the city. It shines like a precious jewel. It has twelve gates with the names of the twelve tribes of Israel, and twelve foundations with the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. The gates are pearls, and the street is pure gold, like clear glass. There is no temple, for God and the Lamb are its temple. The city needs no sun, for God’s glory is its light.

Revelation 21 · Grade 5

The Alpha and the Omega

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 21 brings Revelation toward its end with a vision of new creation. John sees a new heaven and a new earth, and the sea is no more; in Revelation the sea was where the beast arose, so its absence suggests that chaos and evil are gone. The holy city, New Jerusalem, comes down from God like a bride adorned for her husband, continuing the wedding picture from chapter 19. A loud voice announces, Behold, God’s dwelling is with people, and he will dwell with them. The word dwelling recalls the tabernacle, where God lived among Israel in the wilderness. Now God is fully present with his people.

The promises are deeply personal: He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more. The One on the throne says, Behold, I am making all things new, and calls himself the Alpha and the Omega, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. He offers the water of life freely, an image echoing Isaiah’s invitation, Come, everyone who thirsts. Revelation adds that nothing evil will be part of this new world.

An angel shows John the city, shining with the glory of God. Its twelve gates bear the names of the twelve tribes of Israel, and its twelve foundations bear the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb, uniting God’s people from both covenants. The city is a perfect cube, like the Most Holy Place in the temple, suggesting the whole city is filled with God’s presence. Fittingly, John says, I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city has no need for the sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates it, and the nations walk in its light.

Show What You Know

  1. What does the absence of the sea suggest?

  2. What does the word dwelling recall?

  3. What are Alpha and Omega?

  4. Why might the city be shaped like a cube?
