John saw an angel come down out of heaven. He held the key of the abyss and a great chain. He tied up the devil and shut him away for a thousand years, so he could not fool the nations.

John saw people who had stayed faithful to Jesus. They lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Later the devil tried to fight God’s people again, but God stopped him. The devil was defeated forever.

Then John saw a great white throne. The dead, great and small, stood before God. Books were opened, and another book was opened, the book of life. God judges fairly.

Judged Fairly

Read and Think

John sees an angel come down from heaven holding the key of the abyss and a great chain. He seizes the dragon, the old serpent, who is the devil and Satan, binds him for a thousand years, and seals him in the abyss so that he cannot deceive the nations. John also sees thrones and the souls of those who stayed faithful to Jesus and refused to worship the beast. They live and reign with Christ for a thousand years. This is called the first resurrection.

When the thousand years are over, Satan is released and gathers the nations to fight against the camp of God’s people. But fire comes down from heaven and stops them, and the devil is thrown into the lake of fire, which Revelation uses as a picture of final judgment. Evil does not get the last word.

Then John sees a great white throne and the One who sits on it. The dead, great and small, stand before the throne. Books are opened, and another book is opened, the book of life. Each person is judged by what they did. Finally, death itself is thrown into the lake of fire, so death will never hurt anyone again.

Revelation 20 · Grade 5

Death Defeated

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 20 continues the defeat of God’s enemies. The beast and false prophet were dealt with in chapter 19; now the dragon himself is bound. An angel with the key of the abyss seizes the dragon, the old serpent, which is the devil and Satan, and locks him away for a thousand years. The phrase the old serpent recalls the serpent in the Garden of Eden. John sees thrones and the souls of those who had been faithful to the testimony of Jesus and had not worshiped the beast. They lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over these, the second death has no power.

Christians have interpreted the thousand years in different ways. Some read it as a future earthly reign of Christ; others read it as a symbol of the present age of the church or of Christ’s victory already won. Revelation itself focuses on the meaning: God limits evil, and the faithful share in Christ’s reign. After the thousand years, Satan is released and gathers the nations against the beloved city, but fire comes from heaven, and the devil is thrown into the lake of fire. Revelation uses this image as a picture of final, complete judgment on evil.

Then comes the scene of final judgment. John sees a great white throne and him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the sky fled away. The dead, the great and the small, stand before the throne. Books are opened, and another book is opened, which is the book of life, and the dead are judged according to their works. Even death and Hades are thrown into the lake of fire. Paul wrote that the last enemy to be destroyed is death, and here that promise is pictured as fulfilled, preparing for the new creation in chapter 21.

Show What You Know

  1. What does the phrase the old serpent recall?

  2. How have Christians interpreted the thousand years?

  3. Who has no power over those in the first resurrection?

  4. What enemy did Paul say would be destroyed last?

  2. How does seeing death defeated give hope to believers who are grieving?
