The City That Loved Riches

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 18 describes the fall of Babylon. This great city stands for a world system built on pride and greed. An angel with great authority comes down, and the earth is lit by his glory. He announces, Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She is now a home for evil spirits. The nations and kings followed her ways. Merchants grew rich from her luxury.

A voice from heaven calls, Come out of her, my people, that you have no participation in her sins. God sees her pride. She says in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and will in no way see mourning. Therefore her plagues will come in one day.

Kings, merchants, and sailors stand far off. They mourn, because her riches are gone in one hour. But heaven is told to rejoice, because God has judged her. A mighty angel throws a stone like a great millstone into the sea. Babylon will be thrown down like that. No more music, no more work, no more lamp light, and no more wedding joy will be found in her.
