The Dragon Thrown Down

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 12 tells the story behind the conflict in Revelation using signs. A woman appears clothed with the sun, the moon under her feet, and twelve stars on her head. Many readers see her as God’s people, from whom the Messiah came. A great red dragon waits to devour her child as soon as he is born. But the child, who will rule the nations, is caught up to God and his throne. The woman flees to the wilderness, where God has prepared a place to care for her.

Then war breaks out in heaven. Michael and his angels fight against the dragon and his angels. The dragon loses, and there is no longer any place for him in heaven. He is thrown down to the earth. John names him clearly: the old serpent, called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world.

A loud voice celebrates God’s victory. The accuser of our brothers has been thrown down. They overcame him because of the Lamb’s blood, and because of the word of their testimony. Angry because he knows his time is short, the dragon pursues the woman. But she is given two wings of the great eagle to fly to safety, and the earth helps her.
