The Kingdom of Our Lord

Name Date

Read the Story

God said, I will give power to my two witnesses. They will prophesy one thousand two hundred sixty days. These are the two olive trees and the two lamp stands, standing before the Lord of the earth.

When they finished their testimony, the beast from the abyss made war with them and killed them. People who dwell on the earth were glad. But after three and a half days, the breath of life from God entered into them. They stood on their feet. They went up into heaven in the cloud.

The seventh angel sounded. Great voices in heaven said, The kingdom of the world has become the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ. He will reign forever and ever! The twenty-four elders fell on their faces and worshiped God.

Memory Verse

The nations were angry, and your wrath came, as did the time for the dead to be judged, and to give your bondservants the prophets, their reward, as well as to the saints and those who fear your name, to the small and the great, and to destroy those who destroy the earth.”

Revelation 11 · Grade 4

Faithful Witnesses

Name Date

Read and Think

John is given a reed to measure the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship there. Measuring is a picture of God knowing and protecting his people. Then God speaks of two witnesses who prophesy for 1,260 days, wearing sackcloth. They are the two olive trees and the two lamp stands. Their witness echoes Moses and Elijah, who stood before kings with God’s message.

When their testimony is finished, the beast from the abyss attacks and kills them. Their enemies celebrate. But after three and a half days, the breath of life from God enters them, and they stand up. A loud voice says, Come up here! They go up to heaven in a cloud while their enemies watch.

Then the seventh trumpet sounds. Voices in heaven announce, The kingdom of the world has become the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ. He will reign forever and ever! The elders worship God. Then God’s temple in heaven is opened, and the ark of his covenant is seen.

Revelation 11 · Grade 5

He Will Reign Forever

Name Date

Read and Think

The interlude before the seventh trumpet continues. John is given a reed like a rod and told to measure the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship in it. The outer court is given to the nations, who will trample the holy city for forty-two months. Many readers see the measuring as God marking out and preserving his people, even while they face opposition. The numbers 42 months, 1,260 days, and three and a half years all describe the same limited period.

God gives power to his two witnesses, who prophesy 1,260 days clothed in sackcloth. They are the two olive trees and the two lamp stands standing before the Lord of the earth, a picture drawn from the prophet Zechariah. Like Elijah they can shut the sky, and like Moses they can turn water to blood. When they finish their testimony, the beast from the abyss kills them, and those who dwell on the earth rejoice. But after three and a half days the breath of life from God enters into them. They stand on their feet and hear a loud voice saying, Come up here! They go up into heaven in the cloud. Their story follows the pattern of Jesus: faithful witness, death, resurrection, and ascension.

Then the seventh angel sounds, and great voices in heaven declare, The kingdom of the world has become the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ. He will reign forever and ever! The twenty-four elders fall on their faces and thank the Lord God, the Almighty, because he has taken his great power and reigned. The time has come to judge, to reward his servants the prophets and saints, and to destroy those who destroy the earth. God’s temple in heaven is opened, the ark of his covenant appears, and lightning and thunder follow.

Show What You Know

  1. What do the numbers 42 months, 1,260 days, and three and a half years describe?

  2. Which prophet does the olive tree picture come from?

  3. What pattern does the witnesses’ story follow?

  4. What has the time come for, according to the elders?
