The Alpha and the Omega

Read the Story

This book is the revelation of Jesus Christ. God gave it to show his servants what must happen. Blessed is he who reads and those who hear and keep these words. John sends grace and peace to seven assemblies. I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come.

John was on the island of Patmos. On the Lord’s day he heard a loud voice like a trumpet. He turned and saw seven golden lamp stands. Among them was one like a son of man. His hair was white like wool. His eyes were like a flame of fire. His face was like the sun shining.

John fell at his feet. But Jesus laid his right hand on him. He said, Don’t be afraid. I am the First and the Last, and the Living one. I was dead, and behold, I am alive forever and ever. Then Jesus told John to write the things he had seen.

Among the Lampstands

Name Date

Read and Think

Revelation opens with a promise. Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy and keep them. John writes to seven assemblies in Asia. He praises Jesus, who loves us and washed us from our sins. Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him.

John says he was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God. On the Lord’s day he was in the Spirit. A voice like a trumpet told him to write to the seven assemblies. He turned and saw seven golden lamp stands, and one like a son of man among them. His hair was white as snow. His eyes were like fire, and his voice was like many waters.

Jesus held seven stars in his right hand. When John saw him, he fell at his feet. Jesus laid his hand on him and said, Don’t be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I was dead, and behold, I am alive forever and ever. He explained the symbols. The seven stars are the angels of the seven assemblies. The seven lamp stands are the seven assemblies.

Revelation 1 · Grade 5

The First and the Last

Name Date

Read and Think

Revelation calls itself the revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants. It comes through an angel to John, who testifies to all that he saw. It also promises a blessing: blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy and keep them. John greets seven assemblies in Asia with grace and peace from him who is, who was, and who is to come. He praises Jesus, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood.

John was on the isle of Patmos because of God’s word and the testimony of Jesus. On the Lord’s day, a loud voice like a trumpet told him to write to the seven assemblies. He turned and saw seven golden lamp stands. Among them stood one like a son of man, clothed in a long robe with a golden sash. His hair was white as wool. His eyes were a flame of fire, his feet like burnished brass, and his voice like many waters. Out of his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining at its brightest.

These pictures are symbols, and Jesus himself explains some of them. The seven stars are the angels of the seven assemblies. The seven lamp stands are the seven assemblies. When John fell at his feet, Jesus laid his right hand on him and said, Don’t be afraid. I am the First and the Last, and the Living one. I was dead, and behold, I am alive forever and ever. I have the keys of Death and of Hades. Then he said, Write therefore the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will happen hereafter.

Show What You Know

  1. What titles does John give Jesus in his greeting?

  2. Why was John on Patmos?

  3. What does Jesus say he holds?

  4. What three things was John told to write?

Think About It

  1. Why might Revelation use symbols instead of plain words?

  2. How does knowing Jesus holds the keys of death change how people face fear?
