The Whole World Rejoices

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 98 is titled simply A Psalm, and it does not name its writer. It begins with God's victory: Sing to Yahweh a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. God himself won the victory.

God's salvation was not hidden. Yahweh has made known his salvation. He has openly shown his righteousness in the sight of the nations. He kept his promises to Israel: he has remembered his loving kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen it.

So the whole world is called to a festival. People play the harp, the trumpets and the ram's horn before the King. Creation joins in: Let the sea roar. Let the rivers clap their hands. Let the mountains sing for joy together, for he comes to judge the earth with righteousness.

Show What You Know

  1. Who won the victory at the start of the psalm?

  2. Who has seen God's salvation?

  3. What promises did God remember?

Psalms 98 · Grade 5

He Comes to Judge the Earth

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 98 has only the title A Psalm and no named writer. It is closely related to Psalm 96: both begin, Sing to Yahweh a new song, and both end with God coming to judge the earth. Psalm 98 begins with the reason for the new song: he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. The language of a right hand and holy arm recalls God's rescue of Israel at the Red Sea.

The salvation is public and covenantal. Yahweh has made known his salvation. He has openly shown his righteousness in the sight of the nations. He has remembered his loving kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel. God's faithfulness to one nation becomes a display for all: All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

The response grows in three circles. First Israel's temple orchestra plays harp, trumpets and ram's horn before the King, Yahweh. Then the whole earth makes a joyful noise. Finally creation itself joins: the sea roars, the rivers clap their hands, and the mountains sing for joy together. The reason is the King's coming: he will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.

Show What You Know

  1. How is Psalm 98 related to Psalm 96?

  2. What event does the right hand and holy arm recall?

  3. How did God's faithfulness to Israel affect the world?

  4. What are the three circles of praise?
