The Vine God Planted

The title of Psalm 80 calls it a Psalm by Asaph. Hear us, Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock. Three times the psalm says, Turn us again, God. Cause your face to shine, and we will be saved.

The people were sad. You have fed them with the bread of tears. Asaph said Israel was like a vine. You brought a vine out of Egypt. You planted it. It took deep root, and filled the land.

But its walls were broken down, and wild animals fed on it. Asaph prayed, Look down from heaven, and see, and visit this vine. Revive us, and we will call on your name.

The Shepherd and the Vine

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 80 calls it a Psalm by Asaph, set to the tune The Lilies of the Covenant. It prays to God as the Shepherd of Israel, you who sit above the cherubim, shine out. The refrain grows stronger each time, from God to God of Armies to Yahweh God of Armies: Turn us again. Cause your face to shine, and we will be saved.

The people feel God's anger against their prayers. You have fed them with the bread of tears. Then Asaph tells Israel's story as a vine. God brought it out of Egypt, cleared the ground and planted it. It took deep root, its shadow covered mountains, and its branches reached the sea and the River.

Now its walls are broken down. The boar ravages it, and it is burned with fire. Asaph begs God to visit this vine and to strengthen the man at his right hand. He promises, So we will not turn away from you. Revive us, and we will call on your name. In the New Testament, Jesus used the picture of a vine for himself (John 15:1).

Psalms 80 · Grade 5

Turn Us Again

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 80 says it is a Psalm by Asaph. It is a community lament, and verse 2 names the northern tribes Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh. The psalm is built on a refrain repeated in verses 3, 7 and 19, each time with a fuller name for God: Turn us again, God. Cause your face to shine, and we will be saved. The words echo the priestly blessing of Numbers 6.

The central picture is Israel as a vine. You brought a vine out of Egypt. You drove out the nations, and planted it. The vine flourished until its shade covered the mountains and its branches reached the sea. Then God allowed its walls to be broken down so that passersby plucked it and wild animals fed on it. The image shows both God's past care and the people's present ruin.

Asaph asks God to look down from heaven and visit this vine. He prays, Let your hand be on the man of your right hand, on the son of man whom you made strong for yourself. The people answer, So we will not turn away from you. Revive us, and we will call on your name. In the New Testament, Jesus calls himself the true vine (John 15:1), and many Christians read the man of God's right hand in light of him.
