Psalms 80 · Grade 5
Turn Us Again
Read and Think
The title of Psalm 80 says it is a Psalm by Asaph. It is a community lament, and verse 2 names the northern tribes Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh. The psalm is built on a refrain repeated in verses 3, 7 and 19, each time with a fuller name for God: Turn us again, God. Cause your face to shine, and we will be saved. The words echo the priestly blessing of Numbers 6.
The central picture is Israel as a vine. You brought a vine out of Egypt. You drove out the nations, and planted it. The vine flourished until its shade covered the mountains and its branches reached the sea. Then God allowed its walls to be broken down so that passersby plucked it and wild animals fed on it. The image shows both God's past care and the people's present ruin.
Asaph asks God to look down from heaven and visit this vine. He prays, Let your hand be on the man of your right hand, on the son of man whom you made strong for yourself. The people answer, So we will not turn away from you. Revive us, and we will call on your name. In the New Testament, Jesus calls himself the true vine (John 15:1), and many Christians read the man of God's right hand in light of him.
