Read and Think

Psalm 6's title says it is for the Chief Musician, on stringed instruments, upon the eight-stringed lyre, and that it is a Psalm by David. David begins by asking Yahweh not to rebuke him in anger. He pleads, Have mercy on me, Yahweh, for I am faint. His bones are troubled and his soul is in great anguish, and he cries out, But you, Yahweh, how long?

David asks Yahweh to return and deliver his soul for his loving kindness' sake. He describes his sorrow honestly. He is weary with his groaning, and every night he drenches his couch with his tears. His eye wastes away because of grief and because of his adversaries.

Suddenly the psalm turns. David tells all the workers of iniquity to depart from him, for Yahweh has heard the voice of his weeping. Three times he says that God has heard or accepts his prayer. He is sure that his enemies shall turn back.

Yahweh Has Heard

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 6's title reads: For the Chief Musician; on stringed instruments, upon the eight-stringed lyre. A Psalm by David. Believers have long counted it among the penitential psalms, prayers of sorrow and repentance. David asks God not to rebuke or discipline him in wrath. He does not argue that he deserves nothing; he asks for mercy.

David's whole person is in anguish. His bones are troubled, his soul is in great anguish, and he cries, How long? He appeals to God's loving kindness, God's faithful covenant love. He reasons that in death there is no memory of God and that in Sheol no one gives God thanks. He is weary, and every night he floods his bed with tears.

The turn comes suddenly in verse 8. David tells the workers of iniquity to depart, because Yahweh has heard the voice of his weeping. He repeats the truth: Yahweh has heard my supplication. Yahweh accepts my prayer. The psalm shows that honest lament can lead to confident faith. In the New Testament, Jesus uses words like verse 8 when he tells workers of iniquity to depart from him (Matthew 7:23).

  2. What does loving kindness mean in this psalm?

  3. Where does the psalm turn?

  4. In the New Testament, where does Jesus use words like verse 8?
