Psalms 33 · Grade 4

By His Word

Read and Think

Psalm 33 has no title in the text. It is a joyful hymn that begins, Rejoice in Yahweh, you righteous! Praise is fitting for the upright. The people are told to use the lyre and the harp of ten strings and to sing a new song with skill and a shout of joy. The reason is God's character: Yahweh's word is right. All his work is done in faithfulness.

Then the psalm praises God as Creator. By Yahweh's word, the heavens were made. For he spoke, and it was done. He commanded, and it stood firm. The same God rules history. He brings the plans of nations to nothing, but his own counsel stands fast forever. Blessed is the nation whose God is Yahweh. He looks from heaven and sees all people. No king is saved by a large army, and a horse is a vain thing for safety. Instead, Yahweh's eye is on those who fear him and hope in his loving kindness.
