From Plea to Praise

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 28's title says it is By David. It begins with urgent prayer. David calls Yahweh his rock and begs him not to be silent. He lifts his hands toward God's Most Holy Place. He asks not to be dragged away with the wicked, who speak peace with their neighbors, but mischief is in their hearts. Their words sound friendly, but their hearts are not. He asks God to give them what their deeds deserve, because they don't respect the works of Yahweh.

In verse 6 the mood changes completely. Blessed be Yahweh, because he has heard the voice of my petitions. David's heart trusted, and he was helped, so his heart greatly rejoices. Then his prayer widens from himself to all God's people: Save your people, and bless your inheritance. Be their shepherd also, and bear them up forever.

Psalms 28 · Grade 5

The Shepherd Who Carries His People

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 28's title says it is By David. It opens with a cry: To you, Yahweh, I call. My rock, don't be deaf to me, lest, if you are silent to me, I would become like those who go down into the pit. For David, God's silence would feel like death. He lifts his hands toward the Most Holy Place, the inner room of God's sanctuary, as a sign of dependence.

David asks not to be drawn away with the workers of iniquity who speak peace with their neighbors, but mischief is in their hearts. He asks God to give them what their deeds deserve, because they don't respect the works of Yahweh. He leaves justice in God's hands rather than taking revenge himself.

Then comes a sudden turn to thanksgiving: Blessed be Yahweh, because he has heard the voice of my petitions. Yahweh is my strength and my shield. My heart has trusted in him, and I am helped. Therefore my heart greatly rejoices. David then remembers that God is a stronghold of salvation to his anointed, and he ends by praying for the whole nation: Save your people, and bless your inheritance. Be their shepherd also, and bear them up forever. The image of a shepherd carrying his sheep fits the God who cares for his people.

Show What You Know

  1. Why would God's silence feel like death to David?

  2. What is the Most Holy Place?

  3. What does David do with the need for justice?

  4. What image ends the psalm?
