Psalms 27 · Grade 4
Courage in the Dark
Read and Think
Psalm 27's title says it is By David. It opens with bold confidence: Yahweh is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? Light drives away darkness, and salvation means rescue. When enemies came at David, they stumbled and fell. Even if an army should camp against him, his heart would not fear. David's courage comes from God, not from himself.
David's deepest desire is not victory but closeness to God. One thing I have asked of Yahweh: to dwell in Yahweh's house all the days of my life, to see Yahweh's beauty. God will hide him in the day of trouble. The second half becomes a prayer. When God said, Seek my face, David answered, I will seek your face, Yahweh. Even if his father and mother forsook him, Yahweh would take him up. The psalm ends, Wait for Yahweh. Be strong, and let your heart take courage.
