Psalms 138 · Grade 5
The High God Who Cares for the Lowly
Read and Think
Psalm 138 is titled By David. It opens a final group of eight psalms with David's name in their titles (138 to 145). I will give you thanks with my whole heart. Before the gods, I will sing praises to you. David's worship is wholehearted and public, a witness that Yahweh alone deserves praise.
David thanks God for his loving kindness and for his truth, for you have exalted your Name and your Word above all. The turning point is answered prayer: In the day that I called, you answered me. You encouraged me with strength in my soul. David then looks outward. All the kings of the earth will give you thanks, Yahweh, for they have heard the words of your mouth.
Verse 6 holds a key paradox: For though Yahweh is high, yet he looks after the lowly; but he knows the proud from afar. Greatness and tenderness belong together in God. The psalm ends with trust for the future: Though I walk in the middle of trouble, you will revive me. Yahweh will fulfill that which concerns me. Don't forsake the works of your own hands. In the New Testament, Paul is confident that he who began a good work in you will complete it (Philippians 1:6).
