The title of Psalm 127 calls it A Song of Ascents by Solomon. He says that if God does not build the house, the workers work for nothing.

People can work very hard. But God is the one who makes things last. God gives rest and sleep to the people he loves. The psalm says children are a gift from God. Every child is special to him.

Psalm 127 is titled A Song of Ascents. By Solomon. Unless Yahweh builds the house, they who build it labor in vain. Unless Yahweh watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

It is vain to get up early and stay up late, worrying and working. For he gives sleep to his loved ones.

Psalm 127 is titled A Song of Ascents. By Solomon. The psalm says that building without God is empty: Unless Yahweh builds the house, they who build it labor in vain.

The same is true for safety. Unless Yahweh watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain. Hard work is good, but anxious toil is not. It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil, for he gives sleep to his loved ones. Rest is a gift that shows trust.

The second half turns to family. Children are a heritage of Yahweh. The fruit of the womb is his reward. Like arrows in the hand of a mighty man, children carry a family's life into the future. The word house can mean a building or a family, and God builds both.

Psalm 127 is titled A Song of Ascents. By Solomon. Verse 1 says: Unless Yahweh builds the house, they who build it labor in vain. Unless Yahweh watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain. Human effort matters, but only God makes it fruitful and lasting.

Verse 2 warns against anxious overwork: It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil, for he gives sleep to his loved ones. The bread of toil is food eaten with worry. Sleep becomes a quiet act of faith, admitting that God keeps working while we rest.

The psalm then moves from house as building to house as household. Behold, children are a heritage of Yahweh. In ancient Israel, sons who stood in the gate could speak for their family in legal matters, so a full quiver meant security. The psalm teaches that families, like cities and buildings, are gifts God builds. In the New Testament, Paul writes that God gives the growth (1 Corinthians 3:7).
