Psalms 124 · Grade 5

Remembering Rescue

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 124 is titled A Song of Ascents. By David. It is a song of corporate thanksgiving: let Israel now say. The first five verses use a hypothetical, if it had not been Yahweh who was on our side, to make the people feel how close they came to disaster. Remembering what could have happened makes gratitude deeper.

Two images describe the danger. First, enemies would have swallowed them up alive. Second, the waters would have overwhelmed them, and the proud waters would have gone over their soul. Both pictures show danger beyond human strength.

Then the psalm turns to praise. Blessed be Yahweh, who has not given us as a prey to their teeth. A new picture appears: a small bird caught in a hunter's net, helpless until the snare is broken. The escape is God's work, not the bird's. The final verse became a well-known confession in Christian worship: Our help is in Yahweh's name, who made heaven and earth.
