Read and Think

Psalm 124 is titled A Song of Ascents. By David. It invites the whole people to join in: let Israel now say. The psalm asks them to imagine their history without God. If it had not been Yahweh who was on our side, when men rose up against us, then they would have swallowed us up alive.

David uses a flood picture. The waters would have overwhelmed us, the stream would have gone over our soul. Then the proud waters would have gone over our soul. The danger was real and too big for them to escape alone.

But God acted. Blessed be Yahweh, who has not given us as a prey to their teeth. Our soul has escaped like a bird out of the fowler's snare. The snare is broken, and we have escaped. The bird did not break the trap; God did. The psalm ends with confession of faith: Our help is in Yahweh's name, who made heaven and earth.
