Loving God Through His Word

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 119 has no title and names no author. It is the longest chapter in the Bible: 176 verses arranged as an acrostic, with 22 sections of 8 verses each, one for every letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Nearly every verse names God's word with terms like law, testimonies, precepts, statutes, commandments, ordinances, promises, and word.

The psalm is more than a list of rules. It is a prayer of love to the God who speaks. The singer says, With my whole heart I have sought you. He hides God's word in his heart to avoid sin, asks God to open his eyes, and says, How I love your law! It is my meditation all day. He says God's word is settled in heaven forever and that the entrance of your words gives light.

Verse 105 sums up how Scripture guides: Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path. A lamp in ancient times lit only a few steps, so the traveler trusted God one step at a time. The psalm ends not with pride but with need: I have gone astray like a lost sheep. Seek your servant. In the New Testament, Jesus tells of a shepherd who goes after the sheep that was lost (Luke 15:4).
