Psalms 108 · Grade 5

A Steadfast Heart

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 108 is titled A Song. A Psalm by David. It is built from two earlier songs: verses 1-5 come from Psalm 57:7-11 and verses 6-13 from Psalm 60:5-12. Scripture sometimes reuses older words in a new setting, showing that God's truth fits new needs. Here praise comes first, and the request comes second.

David's heart is steadfast, fixed and settled in God. He will make music with his soul and call his harp and lyre to wake up the dawn. His praise is public, among the nations and peoples, and its reason is God's character: loving kindness great above the heavens and faithfulness that reaches to the skies. He prays that God's glory would be over all the earth.

Then God speaks from his sanctuary, claiming Shechem, Gilead, Ephraim, Judah, and even Moab, Edom, and Philistia. Every land belongs to him. David feels the weight of the battle and asks, Who will lead me to Edom? He confesses that the help of man is vain. The psalm closes with confident trust: Through God, we will do valiantly.
