Read and Think

Psalm 1 serves as a doorway into the Psalms. It has no title, and it begins with a blessing on the man who doesn't walk in the counsel of the wicked. The psalm traces a slide from walking with the wicked, to standing with sinners, to sitting among scoffers.

His delight is in Yahweh's law, and he meditates on it day and night. To meditate is to think deeply about God's words. The psalm compares him to a tree planted by the streams of water, which produces its fruit in its season and whose leaf does not wither. The tree does not make its own water; it is planted where water flows.

The wicked are like chaff which the wind drives away, and they will not stand in the judgment. The psalm closes with two endings: Yahweh knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked shall perish. In the New Testament, Jesus calls himself the vine and says that the branch that remains in him bears much fruit (John 15:5).
