Psalms 1 · Grade 4
The Blessed Way
Read and Think
Psalm 1 opens the whole book of Psalms with a picture of two paths. It has no title. The blessed man does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, stand on the path of sinners, or sit in the seat of scoffers. Notice the steps: walking, then standing, then sitting.
Instead, his delight is in Yahweh's law, and he meditates on it day and night. He is like a tree planted by the streams of water, which produces its fruit in its season, and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does shall prosper.
The wicked are not so. They are like chaff, the light husks that blow away when grain is cleaned. They will not stand in the judgment or in the congregation of the righteous. The psalm ends by saying that Yahweh knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked shall perish.
