Two Feasts

Name Date

Read and Think

The chapter pictures two women inviting people to dinner. First, Wisdom has built her house. She has carved out her seven pillars. She has prepared her meat and set her table. She calls, Whoever is simple, let him turn in here! Come, eat some of my bread. Leave your simple ways, and live. Walk in the way of understanding.

In the middle are sayings about correction. Don't reprove a scoffer, lest he hate you. Reprove a wise person, and he will love you. Instruct a wise person, and he will be still wiser. Teach a righteous person, and he will increase in learning. Then the key verse: The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom. The knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Second, the foolish woman also calls from a seat in the high places of the city. She knows nothing, but she invites the simple too. She says that stolen things taste sweet. But those who go to her house do not know that her road leads to death. Two voices call. Each person must choose which invitation to accept. In the New Testament, Jesus says, I am the bread of life (John 6:35).
