Do Not Be Anxious

Name Date

Read the Story

Paul called his friends to stand firm in the Lord. He asked two women, Euodia and Syntyche, to think the same way in the Lord. They had worked hard with Paul to share the good news.

Paul wrote, Rejoice in the Lord always! He said not to be anxious about anything. Pray about everything and give thanks. Then the peace of God will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Paul told them to think about things that are true, honorable, pure, and lovely.

Paul had learned to be content. Sometimes he had plenty. Sometimes he was hungry. Christ gave him strength in every situation. The church had sent him gifts by Epaphroditus. Paul said God would supply every need of theirs.

The Peace of God

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul calls the believers his joy and crown and tells them to stand firm in the Lord. He asks Euodia and Syntyche to agree with each other in the Lord. These women had labored with Paul in the Good News, and their names are in the book of life.

Paul writes, Rejoice in the Lord always! Again I will say, Rejoice! He tells them to let their gentleness be known to all. Instead of being anxious, they should bring every request to God by prayer with thanksgiving. Then the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will keep watch over their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Paul lists what to think about: things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and of good report.

Paul thanks the church for caring for him. He has learned to be content in whatever state he is in. He knows how to have little and how to have plenty. His strength comes from Christ: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. The gifts they sent by Epaphroditus were like a pleasing sacrifice to God. Paul promises, My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Content in Christ

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul begins with deep affection, calling the believers beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, and urging them to stand firm in the Lord. He asks Euodia and Syntyche to agree in the Lord, and he asks a true partner to help these women. These women had worked hard beside Paul to spread the Good News, together with Clement and other fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.

Paul gives a series of short commands. Rejoice in the Lord always! Again I will say, Rejoice! Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. Then he addresses worry: In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. The promise follows: the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will keep watch over their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Paul tells them to think about whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and of good report.

Paul thanks the Philippians for their renewed care. He has learned the secret of contentment. He knows how to be humbled and how to abound, how to have enough food and how to go hungry. He writes, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. The Philippians had shared with him from the beginning, even sending help to Thessalonica. Their gift through Epaphroditus is a sweet-smelling fragrance, an acceptable and well-pleasing sacrifice to God. Paul closes: My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
