Chapter 1Preschool–Grade 5

Philippians 1: To Live Is Christ

Philippians 1 opens with the names Paul and Timothy, servants of Jesus Christ, writing to all the saints at Philippi. Paul thanks God with joy for their partnership in the Good News and is confident that he who began a good work in them will complete it. Paul is in chains, but his bonds have helped the Good News spread, and others have become bold to speak God's word. He says, For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. He asks them to live worthy of the Good News and stand firm together.

Philippians 2: The Mind of Christ

Philippians 2 urges believers to be of one mind, doing nothing through rivalry or conceit, but humbly treating others as more important than themselves. Paul points to Christ Jesus, who existed in the form of God but emptied himself, took the form of a servant, and humbled himself to the point of death on the cross. Therefore God highly exalted him, so that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Paul tells them to do all things without complaining, shining as lights in the world, and he commends Timothy and Epaphroditus.

Philippians 3: Pressing On

Philippians 3 begins: Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord! Paul warns against those who trust in outward things. He lists his own background, but he says he counts everything as loss compared with knowing Christ Jesus his Lord. He wants to be found in Christ, with the righteousness which is from God by faith. Paul has not yet reached perfection, but he presses on toward the goal. He reminds them that our citizenship is in heaven, and believers look forward to Jesus coming from there.

Philippians 4: Rejoice in the Lord

Philippians 4 begins with Paul calling his beloved friends to stand firm in the Lord. He asks Euodia and Syntyche to agree with each other in the Lord. Rejoice in the Lord always! Paul tells them not to be anxious but to pray about everything with thanksgiving, and the peace of God will guard their hearts. He lists things to think about. Paul has learned to be content in every situation and writes, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. He thanks them for their gifts.
