Read the Story

Paul told the church to rejoice in the Lord. He warned them about false teachers. Some said people must keep outward rules to be right with God. Paul had kept many of those rules himself. He was from the tribe of Benjamin. He had been a Pharisee.

But Paul said all that was loss compared to knowing Christ Jesus his Lord. He wanted to be right with God by faith in Christ, not by his own good works.

Paul said he was not perfect yet. He forgot what was behind and reached for what was ahead. He pressed on toward the goal, like a runner. He said our citizenship is in heaven. We wait for the Lord Jesus Christ to come from there.

The Goal and the Prize

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul begins: Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord! Then he warns the believers to beware of false teachers. These teachers trusted outward signs, like circumcision, an outward sign in the law of Moses. Paul says that true believers worship God in the Spirit and rejoice in Christ Jesus. If anyone could trust in his background, Paul could. He was an Israelite of the tribe of Benjamin, a Pharisee, and blameless under the law. He had even persecuted the assembly.

Yet Paul writes that he counts all things to be a loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus. He wants to be found in Christ. His righteousness would not come from the law, but from God through faith in Christ. Paul wants to know Christ and the power of his resurrection.

Paul admits he has not reached perfection. He says: one thing I do: forgetting the things which are behind and stretching forward to the things which are before. He keeps running toward the goal. Paul asks the believers to follow his example. He reminds them that our citizenship is in heaven, and we wait for the Lord Jesus Christ to come from there.

Counting All Things Loss

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul opens the chapter: Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord! He then gives a strong warning against false teachers who said that outward signs, like circumcision (an outward sign in the law of Moses), made people right with God. Paul says that true believers worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. Paul himself had every outward reason for confidence: circumcised the eighth day, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews, a Pharisee, and blameless in the righteousness of the law. He had even persecuted the assembly.

Then comes a great turn. Paul says that whatever was gain to him he now counts as loss for Christ. He counts everything as loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus, his Lord. He wants to be found in Christ, not having a righteousness of his own from the law, but the righteousness which is from God by faith. His deepest desire is to know Christ and the power of his resurrection.

Paul is honest: he has not already obtained or been made perfect. But he says, one thing I do: forgetting the things which are behind and stretching forward to the things which are before, I press on toward the goal. He urges the believers to follow his example. He grieves over many who live as enemies of the cross. But believers have a different hope, for our citizenship is in heaven, from where we also wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

  2. What did Paul do before he followed Christ?
