Paul told them not to try to be first. Be humble. Think of others as better than yourself. Care about what others need, too.

Jesus showed us how. He is God, but He became a servant. He obeyed God, even when He died on the cross. Now God has given Him the highest name. Every person will say Jesus is Lord. Paul said, Do all things without complaining and arguing. Shine like lights!

Humble Like Jesus

Name Date

Read the Story

Paul asked the church to have the same love and be of one mind. Do nothing to look important. In humility, count others better than yourself. Look out for others, not just yourself.

Jesus is our example. He was God, but He did not hold on to His rights. He took the form of a servant and became a man. He humbled Himself and obeyed, even to death on the cross. So God lifted Him up high. Every knee will bow, and every tongue will say Jesus Christ is Lord.

Paul said, Do all things without complaining and arguing. Then you will shine like lights in the world. Paul hoped to send Timothy to them soon. He also sent his friend Epaphroditus, who had been very sick, but God had mercy on him.

Have This Mind in You

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul asks the church to make his joy full by being like-minded, having the same love. He writes, doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself. Each person should look not only to his own things, but also to the things of others.

Paul then points to Christ. Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus. Christ existed in the form of God. Yet He did not cling to His rights. He emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men. He humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, yes, the death of the cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him. One day every knee will bow, and everyone will declare that Jesus Christ is Lord.

So Paul says, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God who works in you both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Do all things without complaining and arguing, so that you may shine as lights in the world. Paul plans to send Timothy, who truly cares for them. He also sends Epaphroditus, who had been sick but was shown mercy by God.

Every Knee Should Bow

Name Date

Read and Think

Philippians 2 begins with an appeal. If they have found help in Christ, any comfort of love, any fellowship of the Spirit, then Paul asks them to make his joy full by being of one mind. He describes humble love: doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself. Each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

Then Paul gives one of the greatest passages about Christ in the Bible. Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus. Though He existed in the form of God, He did not consider equality with God something to hold on to. He emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, yes, the death of the cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name. At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Paul applies this. Believers are to work out their salvation with fear and trembling, not by their own strength: For it is God who works in you both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Do all things without complaining and arguing. Then they will be children of God without defect, seen as lights in the world, holding up the word of life. Paul commends Timothy, who served with him as a child serves a father. He also sends Epaphroditus, who was sick nearly to death, but God had mercy on him.

  1. What does Paul ask the believers to do to make his joy full?

  2. What did Christ not consider something to hold on to?

  3. Why did God highly exalt Him?

  4. What will every tongue confess?

  5. How did Timothy serve with Paul?
