The Sisters Obey God

Name Date

Read the Story

Do you remember the five sisters? God gave them their father's land. Now the leaders of their family had a question.

They asked Moses, What if the sisters marry men from other tribes? Then the land will go to other tribes. Moses asked God.

God said the sisters could marry anyone they wanted from their own tribe. Then the land would stay in the family. The sisters obeyed God. That is how the book of Numbers ends.

Memory Verse

Moses commanded the children of Israel according to Yahweh’s word, saying, “The tribe of the sons of Joseph speak what is right.

The Inheritance Stays

Name Date

Read the Story

The heads of the families of Gilead came to Moses. They said, God commanded that Zelophehad's land be given to his daughters. But if they marry men of another tribe, the land will move to that tribe.

Moses answered by the word of Yahweh. The tribe of Joseph speaks what is right, he said. The daughters may marry whom they think best, but only within their father's tribe. No inheritance would move from tribe to tribe.

Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah did as Yahweh commanded Moses. They married into the families of Manasseh. Their inheritance stayed in their father's tribe.

A Fair Ending

Name Date

Read and Think

In Numbers 27, God gave Zelophehad's daughters their father's land. Now their relatives raised a new concern. If the daughters married into other tribes, their land would pass to those tribes, and Manasseh's portion would shrink.

Moses brought the question to God and gave His answer. The daughters were free to marry whom they chose, as long as their husbands were from their own tribe. That way, each tribe's inheritance stayed whole. God's answer protected both the daughters and their tribe.

The five sisters obeyed and married their cousins. So Numbers ends with a family trusting God's word. Numbers began with a census in the wilderness and ends with a new generation ready to enter the land.

Numbers 36 · Grade 5

An Inheritance Kept

Name Date

Read and Think

The book of Numbers ends by returning to Zelophehad's daughters. The heads of the clan of Gilead, from Manasseh, came before Moses and the princes. They pointed out that if the daughters married into another tribe, their inheritance would be added to that tribe. Even at the Jubilee, the land would not return. Their concern was not to undo the daughters' rights but to keep the tribe's portion whole.

Moses commanded according to the word of Yahweh: The tribe of the sons of Joseph speak what is right. Let them be married to whom they think best, only they shall marry into the family of the tribe of their father. The principle followed: So shall no inheritance of the children of Israel move from tribe to tribe; for the children of Israel shall all keep the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers. Every daughter who inherited land would follow the same rule.

Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah did as Yahweh commanded Moses and married their father's brothers' sons. The book closes: These are the commandments and the ordinances which Yahweh commanded by Moses to the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho. Numbers began with an unbelieving generation and ends with obedient daughters on the edge of promise. Believers have an inheritance incorruptible, undefiled, and that doesn't fade away, reserved in heaven (1 Peter 1:4).
