Numbers 25 · Grade 4
Faithfulness at Baal Peor
Read and Think
Balaam could not curse Israel, but Israel brought trouble on itself. At Shittim, Israelite men joined with the women of Moab in sin and false worship. They ate sacrifices and bowed down to Baal of Peor. This was spiritual unfaithfulness, like breaking a marriage promise to God.
God's anger burned, and a plague spread among the people. God ordered that the leaders of the rebellion be judged. While many wept at the tabernacle, one Israelite leader openly brought a Midianite woman into the camp, defying God before everyone.
Phinehas the priest acted at once to stop this open sin, and the plague ended, though 24,000 had died. God said Phinehas was jealous for His honor. He gave Phinehas a covenant of peace. God's people must stay faithful to Him alone.
