Tassels to Remember

Read the Story

God's people were going to wait in the desert. But God still talked about the land. He said, When you come into the land, bring Me these gifts. God's promise was still true!

God said there was one rule for everyone. The people of Israel and the visitors who lived with them had the same rule.

God told the people to put tassels on the corners of their clothes. Each one had a blue cord. When they saw the tassels, they would remember to obey God.

A Cord of Blue

Name Date

Read the Story

The sad events of chapter 14 were over. Next God gave laws that began, When you have come into the land. This showed that God would still bring Israel into Canaan, even though one generation would not enter.

God described grain, oil, and wine to bring with each offering. He said there would be one law for all. The Israelite and the foreigner who lived with them had the same law. When the people sinned by mistake, the priest would make atonement, and they would be forgiven.

God told them to make fringes on the borders of their garments, with a cord of blue. When they looked at it, they would remember all Yahweh's commandments and do them. They would not follow their own heart and eyes. God said, I am Yahweh your God.

I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am Yahweh your God.”

Remembering God's Commands

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 15 opens with hope. Just after God said the unbelieving generation would die in the wilderness, He gave laws for when they would come into the land. God's plan for His people had not ended. He also said the foreigner living among them would have the same law, showing that God welcomed outsiders who joined His people.

God provided offerings for sins done by mistake, both for the whole community and for individuals. But a person who sinned defiantly, despising Yahweh's word, would be cut off. Soon after, a man was found gathering sticks on the Sabbath, and God commanded that he be put to death. This sad event showed how seriously God treated open rebellion.

Then God gave a gentle reminder. The people were to wear fringes with a blue cord on the corners of their garments. Seeing the tassels, they would remember to obey and be holy to their God, rather than follow their own desires.

Numbers 15 · Grade 5

Fringes, Forgiveness, and a High Hand

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 15 follows the failure at Kadesh with a quiet message of hope. Its laws begin, When you have come into the land of your habitations, which I give to you. The generation that refused would die, but God's promise to the nation stood firm. The offerings included measured portions of fine flour, oil, and wine. God also declared, One law and one ordinance shall be for you and for the stranger who lives as a foreigner with you.

The chapter distinguishes two kinds of sin. For sins committed unwittingly, the priest made atonement and the person was forgiven. But the one who did anything with a high hand, meaning in open defiance, blasphemed Yahweh and was to be cut off, because he had despised Yahweh's word. The account of the man gathering sticks on the Sabbath illustrates this. Moses waited for God's word, and God commanded that he be put to death. It is a sober reminder that God is holy.

Finally God commanded fringes on the borders of garments with a cord of blue, so that you may remember and do all my commandments, and be holy to your God. Jesus Himself wore such a garment, and people touched its fringe for healing (Matthew 9:20; 14:36). In Christ, God writes His law on our hearts. He gives us a reminder within, through His Spirit.
