Like Ripe Figs

Name Date

Read the Story

Nahum says woe to Nineveh. It was full of lies and robbery. It had hurt many nations.

Nahum asks Nineveh, are you better than No-Amon? That city had water all around it, but it still fell. Nineveh's fortresses would be like fig trees with ripe figs. If they are shaken, the figs fall.

Nineveh had more merchants than the stars of the skies. But its guards would flee like locusts. Its shepherds would sleep. Its people would be scattered on the mountains. Everyone who heard would know Nineveh's cruelty had ended.

The Fall of a Cruel City

Name Date

Read and Think

Nahum's final chapter begins with woe to the city that was full of lies and robbery. Nineveh had grown powerful by taking from others, and there seemed no end to its prey. Yahweh of Armies says, behold, I am against you.

Nahum reminds Nineveh of No-Amon, a great city in Egypt. It had rivers around it like a wall and powerful helpers, yet it was carried away. Nineveh was no better. Its fortresses would be like fig trees with first-ripe figs; if shaken, they fall into the mouth of the eater. Its gates would be set wide open.

Nineveh had increased its merchants more than the stars of the skies, but its guards would vanish like locusts when the sun appears. Its shepherds slumber, and its people are scattered on the mountains with no one to gather them. The book ends by saying that all who hear the news will clap their hands, for who hasn't felt your endless cruelty?

Show What You Know

  1. What two sins does verse 1 name?

  2. Why does Nahum mention No-Amon?

  3. How are Nineveh's fortresses like ripe figs?

  4. What question ends the book?

Think About It

  1. Nineveh's cruelty affected many nations. How do our choices affect other people?

  2. The book ends with God stopping cruelty. How does this give hope to people who are treated unfairly?

Memory Verse

Nahum 3 · Grade 5

Who Hasn't Felt Your Cruelty?

Name Date

Read and Think

Nahum 3 opens with a funeral cry: woe to the bloody city! It is all full of lies and robbery—no end to the prey. Nahum calls Nineveh a bloody city, full of lies and robbery, and the prophet describes the coming battle in quick, sharp images. Yahweh of Armies declares, behold, I am against you, and he says Nineveh will be laid waste with no one left to mourn for her.

Nahum then asks a pointed question: are you better than No-Amon? This Egyptian city had the Nile as its rampart and Cush, Egypt, Put, and Libya as its helpers, yet it went into captivity. If such a city could fall, so could Nineveh. Its fortresses would be like fig trees with first-ripe figs that fall into the mouth of the eater when shaken. Its gates would be set wide open, and preparations for a siege would not help.

Nineveh's wealth would not save it. It had increased its merchants more than the stars of the skies, yet its guards and officials are like locusts that fly away when the sun appears. Your shepherds slumber, king of Assyria, and your people are scattered on the mountains. The book closes with a question: all who hear the report clap their hands, for who hasn't felt your endless cruelty? Nahum ends with no hope for Nineveh, but with comfort for every nation that had suffered under it.

Show What You Know

  1. What sins does verse 1 charge against Nineveh?

  2. What lesson does Nahum draw from No-Amon?

  3. What do the locusts in verse 17 show?

  4. Why do the nations clap their hands at the end?
