The End of the Lions' Den

Name Date

Read and Think

Nahum 2 pictures the fall of Nineveh as if it is already happening. An attacker comes up against the city. Nineveh is told to keep the fortress and watch the way, but its defenses would fail. In the middle of the scene, Nahum explains God's purpose: Yahweh restores the excellency of Jacob, his people who had been ruined by destroyers.

The city is thrown into confusion. Chariots rush through the streets. The gates of the rivers are opened, and the palace is dissolved. Nineveh had been like a pool of water, but now its people flee. Its silver and gold, an abundance of every precious thing, are carried off.

Nahum asks, where is the den of the lions? Nineveh had been like a lion that tore prey for its cubs and filled its den with what it took. It had grown rich by hurting others. Yahweh of Armies says, behold, I am against you. The voice of its messengers would no more be heard.

Show What You Know

  1. Why does God act, according to verse 2?

  2. What opens and what is dissolved in verse 6?

  3. What does the lions' den picture show about Nineveh?

  4. What does Yahweh of Armies say to Nineveh?

Think About It

  1. Nineveh grew rich by hurting others, but it did not last. Why does treating others unfairly never truly win?

  2. God restored his hurting people. How can you trust God to make things right for those who are hurt?

Memory Verse

“For Yahweh restores the excellency of Jacob as the excellency of Israel, for the destroyers have destroyed them and ruined their vine branches.”

Nahum 2 · Grade 5

Yahweh Says, I Am Against You

Name Date

Read and Think

Nahum 2 is written like a vivid report from the battlefield, though it is a prophecy. He who dashes in pieces has come up against Nineveh. With bitter irony, the prophet tells the city to keep the fortress, watch the way, and fortify its power, because no defense will be enough. Verse 2 gives the reason behind the scene: Yahweh restores the excellency of Jacob, for destroyers had ruined his vine branches. Judgment on the oppressor is also rescue for the oppressed.

Nahum describes red shields, flashing chariots, and troops rushing to the wall. The gates of the rivers are opened, and the palace is dissolved. The city that had been like a peaceful pool of water now drains away as people flee, with no one looking back. The treasure it had gathered from other nations, an abundance of every precious thing, is carried off, and the hearts of its people melt.

Then Nahum uses a powerful image. Where is the den of the lions? Nahum pictures Nineveh as a lions' den that had filled its dens with prey taken from other peoples. Now Yahweh of Armies declares, behold, I am against you. He will cut off its prey from the earth, and the voice of its messengers will no more be heard. The city that frightened everyone would itself be silenced.

Show What You Know

  1. What is ironic about the commands in verse 1?

  2. How is judgment on Nineveh also rescue for Judah?

  3. Why is the lions' den a fitting picture for Nineveh?

  4. What does God declare in verse 13?
