The End of the Lions' Den

Name Date

Read and Think

Nahum 2 pictures the fall of Nineveh as if it is already happening. An attacker comes up against the city. Nineveh is told to keep the fortress and watch the way, but its defenses would fail. In the middle of the scene, Nahum explains God's purpose: Yahweh restores the excellency of Jacob, his people who had been ruined by destroyers.

The city is thrown into confusion. Chariots rush through the streets. The gates of the rivers are opened, and the palace is dissolved. Nineveh had been like a pool of water, but now its people flee. Its silver and gold, an abundance of every precious thing, are carried off.

Nahum asks, where is the den of the lions? Nineveh had been like a lion that tore prey for its cubs and filled its den with what it took. It had grown rich by hurting others. Yahweh of Armies says, behold, I am against you. The voice of its messengers would no more be heard.

Show What You Know

  1. Why does God act, according to verse 2?

  2. What opens and what is dissolved in verse 6?

  3. What does the lions' den picture show about Nineveh?

  4. What does Yahweh of Armies say to Nineveh?

Think About It

  1. Nineveh grew rich by hurting others, but it did not last. Why does treating others unfairly never truly win?

  2. God restored his hurting people. How can you trust God to make things right for those who are hurt?

Memory Verse

“For Yahweh restores the excellency of Jacob as the excellency of Israel, for the destroyers have destroyed them and ruined their vine branches.”

Prayer

Dear God, thank You for restoring what is broken. Help me . Amen.

Take It Home

For families: talk about these together.

  • How does it help to know God cares about people who have been hurt?
  • Why can't money or big buildings keep people safe without God?
