Nahum 1 · Grade 5
Good News on the Mountains
Read and Think
Nahum 1:1 calls this book a revelation about Nineveh and the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite. The book of Jonah showed God's mercy to Nineveh when it turned from evil; Nahum shows God's justice when cruelty continues. Both reveal the same God.
Nahum opens with a hymn about God's character. Yahweh is a jealous God who avenges wrong. Yet verse 3 balances this: Yahweh is slow to anger, and great in power, and will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. These words echo God's description of himself to Moses. Creation responds to him: the sea dries up, the mountains quake, and the earth trembles at his presence. Who can stand before his indignation?
Then verse 7 offers comfort: Yahweh is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knows those who take refuge in him. The same power that judges the oppressor protects the oppressed. God tells Judah, I will break his yoke from off you, and will burst your bonds apart. The chapter ends with joy: behold, on the mountains the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace! Isaiah 52:7 uses the same picture, and in the New Testament, Paul quotes it in Romans 10:15 about those who preach the gospel.
