Nahum 1 · Grade 4
Slow to Anger, Great in Power
Read and Think
Nahum 1:1 calls this a revelation about Nineveh, the book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite. Nineveh was the capital of Assyria, an empire that had hurt many nations. This book announces that God would bring its cruelty to an end.
Nahum begins by describing God. Yahweh is jealous for his people and will judge his enemies. He is slow to anger and great in power, and he will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. He has his way in the whirlwind and the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. The mountains quake and the earth trembles at his presence.
In the middle of this mighty picture comes a gentle verse: Yahweh is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble, and he knows those who take refuge in him. To his suffering people God promises, I will break his yoke from off you. The chapter ends with a messenger on the mountains who brings good news and publishes peace. Judah can keep its feasts again.
