He Has Shown You What Is Good

Micah 6 · Grade 4

Justice, Mercy, and Humility

Name Date

Read and Think

Micah 6 is like a court case. Yahweh calls the mountains and the foundations of the earth to listen. He has a case against his people. My people, he says, what have I done to you? How have I burdened you? He reminds them of his kindness: he redeemed them from Egypt and sent Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. He reminds them how he turned Balaam's words into blessing.

Then a worshiper asks how to come before the exalted God. Should he bring burnt offerings, calves a year old, thousands of rams, or rivers of oil? The answer is not a bigger gift. He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does Yahweh require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

The last part of the chapter shows how far the people were from this. Merchants used a short ephah, dishonest scales, and deceitful weights. The rich were full of violence, and people spoke lies. God warned that they would sow but not reap, and eat but not be satisfied.

Micah 6 · Grade 5

What Does the Lord Require?

Name Date

Read and Think

Micah 6 is set in a courtroom. Yahweh tells his prophet to plead his case before the mountains, the enduring foundations of the earth. Then God speaks tenderly: my people, what have I done to you? How have I burdened you? Answer me! He recounts his saving acts: he brought them out of Egypt, redeemed them from slavery, and sent Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.

A worshiper responds with a series of rising offers. Should he come with burnt offerings and year-old calves? Would Yahweh be pleased with thousands of rams or ten thousand rivers of oil? The offers grow bigger, as if God could be bought. Micah's answer cuts through it all: he has shown you, O man, what is good. What does Yahweh require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

The rest of the chapter shows the gap between this standard and the city's life. Merchants kept treasures of wickedness, a short ephah, dishonest scales, and a bag of deceitful weights. The rich were full of violence, and people spoke lies. Because they followed the statutes of Omri and the works of Ahab's house, they would sow but not reap and eat but not be satisfied.

Show What You Know

  1. What does God ask his people in verse 3, and what tone does it show?

  2. Why do the worshiper's offers keep growing larger?

  3. What three requirements does verse 8 give?

  4. Whose example were the people following, according to verse 16?
