Micah 4 · Grade 5

The Mountain of the Lord

Name Date

Read and Think

Right after the warning that Zion would be plowed like a field, Micah lifts our eyes to the latter days. The mountain of Yahweh's temple will be established on the top of the mountains and exalted above the hills, and peoples will stream to it. The same promise appears in Isaiah 2:2-4, showing how important this vision was.

Many nations will say, come! Let's go up to the mountain of Yahweh, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths. The law will go out of Zion. Yahweh will judge between many peoples, and they will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, neither will they learn war anymore. Every man will sit under his vine and under his fig tree, and no one will make them afraid.

Micah adds that while other nations walk in the name of their gods, we will walk in the name of Yahweh our God forever. Yahweh promises to assemble the lame and gather the driven away, making them a strong nation, and he will reign over them on Mount Zion forever. The road there would pass through labor pains and exile to Babylon, yet even there Yahweh would redeem them. Christians believe this promise of worldwide peace is fulfilled through the reign of the Messiah.
