Hear, O Earth

Name Date

Read the Story

Micah 1:1 says this is Yahweh's word that came to Micah of Morasheth. It came in the days of three kings of Judah: Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah.

Micah calls out to all peoples and to the earth. He says the Lord Yahweh is a witness from his holy temple. Yahweh is coming down. The mountains melt under him like wax before the fire.

Why is God coming? It is because of the sins of the house of Israel. Samaria and Jerusalem had turned away. Micah does not cheer about this. He says he will lament and wail. He grieves because the trouble has come to the gate of his people.

A Prophet Who Weeps

Name Date

Read and Think

Micah 1:1 says this is Yahweh's word that came to Micah of Morasheth in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. It was a message about Samaria and Jerusalem, the capital cities of Israel and Judah.

Micah opens with a call for the whole world to listen. Let the Lord Yahweh be witness against you, he says, from his holy temple. Then he describes Yahweh coming out of his place. The mountains melt under him, and the valleys split apart like wax before the fire. This picture shows how great God is.

Yahweh explains that this is for the disobedience of Jacob and the sins of the house of Israel. Samaria would become like a rubble heap, and its idols would be broken. Micah does not speak coldly. He says he will lament and wail and mourn, because the trouble reaches to the gate of his people, even to Jerusalem.

  2. What happens to the mountains when Yahweh comes?

  3. What reason does Yahweh give in verse 5?

Micah 1 · Grade 5

The Lord Is Coming Down

Name Date

Read and Think

Micah 1:1 says this is Yahweh's word that came to Micah of Morasheth in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem. Micah's message is for both the northern kingdom of Israel, whose capital was Samaria, and the southern kingdom of Judah, whose capital was Jerusalem.

The book opens like a courtroom. Micah summons all peoples and the earth to hear, and he names the Lord Yahweh as a witness from his holy temple. Yahweh comes out of his place and treads on the high places of the earth. The mountains melt under him like wax before the fire, and the valleys split apart like waters poured down a steep place. Before such a God, no nation can hide.

Yahweh names the cause: the disobedience of Jacob and the sins of the house of Israel. He asks what the disobedience of Jacob is, and answers that it is Samaria; the high places of Judah are Jerusalem itself. Samaria would become like a rubble heap, and its idols would be beaten to pieces. Micah does not rejoice in this judgment. He laments and wails, because her wounds are incurable, and the trouble has come even to Judah and the gate of Jerusalem. The chapter ends with a list of towns whose names Micah uses as wordplays for the grief to come.

Show What You Know

  1. Why is the opening of Micah like a courtroom?

  2. What does the melting of the mountains show about Yahweh?

  3. How does Yahweh answer his own question about Jacob's disobedience?

  4. How does Micah respond personally to the judgment?

  2. Sin had spread from Samaria to Jerusalem. How can a wrong habit spread, and what can stop it?
